Flores Island

We've travelled the incredible Flores island from Labuan Bajo in the West up to Maumere on the other side. Flores became our destination not only to see Komodo dragons, the heaviest lizards on Earth, but also to witness catholic customs around Big Friday. Larantuka was too far and already booked out so we decided to take a car and see a procession in Sikka in the southern coast of the island. We had to leave before the procession actually started but it was a great experience to see these deeply religious people attending a mass there.

My strongest memory of the island is however the lively colours of its small town houses, the vibrant flowers of the sun umbrellas and the painted cars equipped with massive sound systems. Make sure you do not miss the fishing village called Wuring, near Maumere, it's an evidence life can be lived in happiness despite extreme poverty.
